
A Straight-Talk Guide to Carbon Fiber IR Lamps
If you’re used to standard tungsten coils, carbon fiber lamps are a different beast entirely. Instead of a basic wire, we use a carbon-fiber core tucked inside a quartz envelope. The goal here is simple: get a massive amount of heat to hit your target, and do it fast. Let’s talk power. The relationship between your voltage and wattage is what actually dictates your heat flux. If you cram a high wattage into a short tube, that filament is going to get scorching hot. That’s exactly what you want if you need a surface to heat up the second the lamp kicks on. But be careful with your power supply. Stick to the 220V or 110V spec. If you try to force too much current through a low-voltage tube, the filament will just snap. It’s a quick and expensive way to ruin your day. What they’re made of We use high-purity quartz glass because it’s tough. It can handle the shock of heating up and cooling down rapidly without cracking. Plus, the carbon fiber spreads the heat more evenly across the lamp than old-school wires ever could. When it comes to plugging them in, we offer R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re designed to be drop-in replacements for most industrial heater banks. They fit tight, which is key—you don’t want any arcing at the terminals. Using them in the real world These are the workhorses for things like PET blowing, paint curing, and plastic welding. The short-wave energy punches through the material surface almost instantly. But there’s a catch. Because they’re so powerful, they run incredibly hot. Don’t mount these flush against anything that might melt. You’ll need a housing with great ventilation or some active cooling, otherwise, your reflectors might warp. And please, use high-temp leads. Nobody wants to deal with melted insulation. If your cooling system can’t keep up with the heat load, your lamps won’t last nearly as long as they should. Give them some room to breathe, and they’ll take care of you.
